An Interview with DJ GLEN C.

By Nicole Grant

Nicole Grant had an oppportunity to speak with DJ Glen C. and ask some of the questions many of you are dying to know!

Q. What inspired you to become a DJ?

A. My love of music - period! It was my strong passion for reggae music that my father passed down to me that really sparked my interests at a young age. He had tons of records, a big sound system and he played music EVERY day. The biggest enjoyment for me was just to change the record when it was done!

As I grew older, my love for music expanded. My older brother used to play a lot of old school and R&B (WBLK) and since we shared a room, it grew on me. I was listening to 88.1, 89.5, 93.7 and 107.9 religiously! Soon, I was collecting reggae, R&B, and Hip-hop cassettes. At times, I would take this massive collection and play at house parties, and BBQs (YES! DJing using cassettes!!)

It wasnt long before I increased my selection to include house, calypso and pop.

I wanted to get to the next level..but 1200s were way too expensive!

After scouring the city for a turntable with pitch control, I finally settled with a Pyramid version. It was about $200.00 but my big brother helped out and soon, I was DJing with a cassette player and a turntable! (laughs) Next came a Pyramid mixer and another turntable borrowed from my sister-in-law. Now I was a DJ!

After a bit of practice, I was able to start playing out on a regular basis. I was playing at pretty big clubs, like Spectrum, Max, Club 27s, Conspiracy, not to mention all of the community centres and basement parties! I mainly played reggae music, because thats what I had the majority of on vinyl. Then I met Jonathan Shaw and Supernova. They both really inspired me to take my talents to the next level. So, I (finally) invested in a pair of legendary Technics 1200 turntables, bought some R&B, hip-hop, house and old school on vinyl, registered the business and continued doing it professionally!

Q. How long have you been in this business as a DJ?

A. 12 years ago, when I had both turntables and getting paid to entertain, I considered myself a DJ. Mind you, Ive been playing music since I was old enough to lift a record!

    Q. What is your main focus in this industry?

    A. To play for as many venues as possible in efforts to develop a stronger presence in the music industry as a DJ. I play at Club Paradise on Fridays, but I try to leave my Saturdays and Sundays open to do a variety of different events. That's where you really get an opportunity to meet new people, be more creative and have fun!

    Q. What gives you the drive you need to play to the best of your ability?

    A. My motivation is drawn from crowd appreciation. Most DJs feed off of a crowds energy - the better the crowd, the better I play! Being a Capricorn, Im also a bit of a perfectionist. I play close attention to what I play and how I play it.

    Q. How long do you see yourself in this business?

    A. I have no intention of leaving it. Its opened up a really exciting world for me and unless something drastic happens, I hope to continue enjoying it as long as I can do it!

    Q. What is Volume 7 Sounds?

    A. Volume 7 Sounds is the name of my business.

My goal is to be more of a solutions provider, instead of just a DJ. For example, if youve got a wedding coming up, my roll is to provide a 'sound solution' for your function by asking the right questions, getting you quality equipment and setting the musical mood just the way you want it!

Moreover, Volume 7 Sounds is more than just the DJ services - its a multi-dimensional business. I also offer event promotion, consultation, and computer services - providing just the right 'sound solution'!

    Q. Where did the name 'Volume 7 Sounds' come from?

    A. It is the name of my fathers sound system, so I did him the respect of taking it over and carrying on the legacy.

    Q. Would you get into production like some of the DJs around?

    A.  I do very little on an ad-hoc basis. Im not sure if this is a path I plan on taking in the future, but Im thankful that the options are open.

    Q.  Is there anyone in the DJ industry that you admire?

    A.  I enjoy DJ Starting from Scratch's creativity, The Juiceman Jonathan Shaws consistency, and DJ Tyrones crowd moving energy.

    Q.  Could you ever see yourself as a "Radio DJ"?

    A.  I've played on the radio and enjoy doing it every now and then.

    Q. What does the "C" in "DJ Glen C" stand for?

    A. The "C" stands for my last name, (which is) Cooper. I decided to go with that, because I did not want to give myself a "stigma" like some nicknames do.

    Q. Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

    A. I see myself continuing to learn and grow as a person and hopefully some of it will rub off onto the business! (laughs) Seriously, though, I got into this business because it was fun, and I love music! Until any of those two things change, by the grace of God, I plan to keep on keepin on!
