With your help, we're trying to raise
funds to expand a Basic school located in Polly Ground, St. Catherines in Jamaica! During
a trip back to Jamaica, my brother, Ken, took the time to visit the Basic school he attended 36 years ago. The small one-room
school was full, now housing over 50 students! It was extremely hot (even for Jamaica) and the noise levels were incredible!
There were 6 kids sharing the same desk, simply because there was no more space to put another one. It was heartbreaking...
He bought some fans to help with the heat, but we
need your help for the next step. The school is 1300 sq, ft. and our goal through this fundraiser is to build an additional
800 sq. ft so that these children will have a better learning environment.
From: Ken Cooper:
Hello Friends,
Thanks to your support we have started the foundation for Polly Ground Basic School!
As time goes by I realize
how big this is to manage, especially when you do not have any prior experience like me. To arrange drawings, labour, material,
security, catering, and local workers is tougher than I thought especially when you are in a different country. My goal to
finish this school addition in July may be just a dream but I am going to give it my best . I will complete this.
I am encouraged and amazed of how many inquires I have had in the last 30 days of people just interested in
the progress of this project. I have delayed updates because I don’t want to be annoying to friends and also I
wanted to have some substantial information to pass along.
During my recent visit to the Island we were able start
clearing the way for the foundation. I met with some local businesses with efforts of getting their assistance, however
no confirmations yet. I also met with the Pastor of the church since the school was previously a church to get
written permission to build. (Successful) I also found out the land where the school is situated was originally donated
to the church by my Great Grandfather. (Did not know that) We were able get the assistance of 25 volunteers,
they used a jack hammer, sledge hammers and anything and everything that was possible to clear the way for our section of
the building. (see Pictures)
Our May New York fundraiser did not happen due to conflicting schedules
with our major supporters, however one is been planned in the Polly Ground area itself during my visit in July. The Polly
Ground Community Club has been established. This Club’s purpose is to have the local community assist the local
community. There is a lot of things that are happening right now but the most important thing is to plan properly and
have a safe build! I am still looking for donations and unfortunately the economic situation is affecting everyone,
so I find myself starting this project about $4500.00 short of my $16000.00 goal.
I am working with two registered
charitable organizations:
For the school expansion (COFI) Compassionate Outreach Foundation (852697531RR0001).
www.coficares.ca 82 Chancellor Drive.
Woodbridge, Ontario, L4L 7N4 (provides tax receipts for donations over $20.00 )
A non- profit organization for
school supplies called ACCESS: Allowing Children a Chance at Education with School Supplies and Educational Opportunities.

Thanks for your
continued support it means the world to me!
Kindest regards,
